There is so much space in this! I dehydrated 5 pounds of beef jerky in one cycle, and also dehydrated about 25 medium-large apples in one cycle. It has a fairly large footprint, so we store it in the basement until we're ready to use it again. The unit isn't heavy, so it is not much trouble to carry.

This is far too loud to use in the average kitchen. I should have kept my 4-tray and bought a second one. The 4-tray isn't quiet either, but at least it's tolerable.

Makes delicious jerky! Review by Autumn

I use this machine many different times during the year but it is extremely helpful around the holidays. My family expects fresh beef jerky in a wide variety of flavors. Nine large trays give everyone a chance to experiment with different marinades. If you want to make homemade beef jerky this is the perfect machine for it.

We got the 9 tray around a month ago. It is a little noisy but I've gotten used to it. It's been a good investment in food prep.

It's true, this is an awesome machine. Very fast, fairly even drying, large trays, huge capacity. My main complaint is that the fan is rather loud, and when the machine is on for hours at a time it does get on my nerves after awhile. Don't bother with the Paraflexx sheets for fruit leather - unbleached parchment paper is faster, costs less, and you can store the finished leather with the paper still on, and save time.

Unless you sleep in your kitchen, any noise shouldn't be a problem. Get the nine tray model instead of the five tray. I always fill mine up and find myself wanting even more space (even with nine trays!) You can always dry a small batch in a large dehydrator, but you can't dry a large batch in a small dehydrator. :)

This is one of the only food dehydrators that don't require tray rotation to get your food evenly dry, and you can put fruits and vegetables of any size in there. Worth every penny.

So far I have had great success with this. I've made flax crackers, corn chips, bananas and I have coconut for macaroons going.

The unit noise doesn't bother me, it's comparable to a microwave hum when you're cooking something in the microwave. Quieter, actually. I could see the noise as distracting for someone living in a studio apartment.

Since I don't have counter space in my kitchen I have this on the floor in my dining room. My husband and I have started eating more raw foods. I would have bought this appliance years ago had I known how easy it is to eat raw when you have the right equipment.

Couldn't fix it on my own. Review by Mavis

On the day I received the dehydrator I was so excited that I went to the store and bought bags and bags of fruit to dry. I spent a couple of hours washing, trimming and preppeing before filling and starting the dehydrator, and the fan started with no problems. The fan was not too loud for me.

The next morning I eagerly checked the fruit. It was not at all what I expected. Some was still wet, so I left it on all day while I went to work.

That evening when I returned home and checked the fruit, there was little change. I felt outside the dehydrator and could feel no heat, so I turned the temperature to the max setting. No heat. I felt next to the heating coil. There was no heat. I checked the troubleshooting in the back of the manual. That didn't help. So, I called Excalibur. I was told that the fuse was bad and that they'd send me a new one with instructions on how to replace it.

In a few days I received a package that included a new thermostat and a new fuse, along with several pages of instructions for replacing each.

So, I took the whole thing apart, removed the screws holding in the thermostat, removed the wires, which were a little different from the diagram in the instructions, and attached the new thermostat, replacing the wires and screws. I plugged it in before reassembling the whole thing and the heating coil still did not work.

The fuse was very difficult for me. The wire part that had to be bent was stiff and I could not bend it into the right shape. After fighting with it for an hour or so I finally got the fuse in place and plugged the dehydrator in, and the coil immediately turned red! YES! So, I unplugged it and put everything back together and plugged it in -- NO HEAT. I disassembled and reassembled for another hour. Still no heat.

Someone else needs to fix this.

My boyfriend loves making beef jerky. We had a small Nesco decided to upgrade to a bigger and better dehydrator so that we'd be able to make enough jerky to last at least a week. We were able to make a batch of Jerky in five and a half hours with the Excalibur. The next day we made a batch of apple chips on the recommended temp setting that also turned out great.

This is actually quieter than our 350 watt Nesco was -- it only makes a low humming noise. It dries our food evenly too... we used to have to rotate the trays regularly but now we just turn it on and wait for our stuff to dry. We couldn't be happier with it.

Won't buy this brand again Review by John Parer

This machine a good job when working. The heating element stopped working after four uses.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Excalibur. There is no parts manual and you can only buy parts from their company. If you can find someone there who will call you back.
