Public service announcement to everybody with skin problems: this may be the best (and weirdest) idea you hear all day. Throw away the toxic, chemical-packed, drying face wash you’re currently using and reach for the nearest bear-shaped squeeze bottle of honey. It’s time to simplify your cleansing routine and transform your skin.
I have dry, sensitive skin, and washing with a regular cleanser (Neutrogena, Clean & Clear, etc.) always left my face feeling incredibly tight and dehydrated, like Botox gone wild. I couldn’t wait more than 5 seconds after washing before slathering on moisturizer. As I’ve grown more and more obsessed with natural beauty, I’ve seen many methods for facial cleansing–from DIY scrubs to castor oil mixes–but this is by far the simplest and most delicious method I’ve seen yet. It’s easy, perfectly healthy, and oh-so-sweet! Try adding a honey face wash to your toiletry routine; even once or twice a week should have you seeing big-time benefits. And for what it’s worth, two days after starting to wash my face with honey, someone told me my skin was “glowing.” Jackpot!
Haven’t you heard? Raw honey is practically magic. It’s so amazingly healing that you can put it on anything from pimples to paper-cuts and they’ll practically be gone in the morning. Honey is a humectant, meaning it attracts water to your skin, which is why it’s so incredibly moisturizing. Raw honey has a pH level of 4.5 and falls within skin’s naturally healthy pH range, while its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties help to heal acne and prevent unwanted bacterial growth.
Like so many other things in the world of health, raw is just better. Regular, pasteurized honey is heated past the point of being beneficial–the heating kills the bacterial enzymes that are so great for your skin.
Here, a short list of the reasons you should wash with honey:
1. Cheap. Yeah, a jar of raw honey can run you about $8, but it will last for months (and never goes bad. Plus, have you seen the prices in the drugstore face wash aisle lately?
2. Simple. One ingredient. ONE. Can your current face wash say as much?
3. Glowing. The elusive adjective that we all want to hear when it comes to our skin. If anything can make you glow more, it’s raw honey.
Pull your hair back with a headband (Ladiesandgentlemen. Trust me, you don’t want honey in your hair). Remove any eye makeup (I recommend a cotton ball and a dab of olive oil). Moisten your face, and scoop out about a teaspoon of honey. Rub all around your face, and leave on for as long as you want–if you’d like to transition into honey face mask mode for a while, go ahead. If any of this face wash gets in your mouth, it’s definitely not the end of the world. Rinse well. Pat dry. Yum.
