I recently returned from an impromptu vacation, and while I completely abandon any type of healthy eating while away, it’s time for yet another detox.
I detox, on average, three times a year, and they usually coincide with the end of a vacation or holiday of some sort.
When it comes to detoxing one can either look to pills and programs, which work very well, but can become quite pricey; or one can choose to detox using food. And although there are many foods for detoxing, today I am going to focus on the top five foods for detoxing!
Top Five Foods for Detoxing
This leafy green is more than just a weed – it is high in vitamin B complex, vitamin C and several minerals. And chlorophyll, which is a major constituent of dandelion greens and all leafy green foods, is considered a very powerful blood purifier.
Ginger increases the excretions of toxins via the skin, bowels and kidneys. It possesses antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties and helps to combat infection (not to mention it adds a nice pizzazz to any juice or smoothie creation!)
This classic fruit purifies the bloodstream and increases lymphatic action, and pectin, a soft gelling fiber found in apples, supports the colon’s peristaltic movement and therefore promotes the excretion of toxic waste.
It’s important to note that apples find themselves number one on the dirty dozen list - a list containing the top 12 most commonly sprayed and chemically treated produce and fruit. When detoxing, or anytime for that matter, go organic.
Lemons are essential when it comes to detoxing, as they aid digestion by increasing saliva flow and stimulating liver function. And lemon juice purifies and alkalizes the blood and has been shown to have laxative and diuretic effects – perfect for eliminating the post vacation bloat!
You wouldn’t expect to find grapes on this list, but here they are! This often overlooked fruit stimulates the liver and promotes bowel and kidney function. Grapes also have a cleansing effect on all tissues and glands and speeds metabolic function.
And you know what the best attribute of these detoxing foods happen to be? When pushed through a juicer, the combination makes for a deliciously detoxing libation!
