Blending vs. Juicing: The Showdown

Blending vs. Juicing: The Showdown

Blend 'em up or juice 'em down?

To blend or to juice? - that is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to chug a frosty glass of sweet green nectar, or to slurp up a creamy concoction with a spoon…ahem.

You get the point. Personally, we’re big proponents of the blend and juice theory (otherwise known as “get your greens whenever you can, however you can”), but if you’ve ever vacillated between the two, you know that each version has its pros and cons. So we’re here to help you decide.

There’s no right answer—it all comes down to what you want out of your veggies.

Juicing: It’s all about VOLUME

The biggest pro of juicing is that it enables you to get a ton of nutrients, fast. Are you planning to sit down and eat a head of kale, a plate of spinach, a couple of carrots, and a pear? Of course not—but with juicing, you can drink it all up in mere seconds.

Juicing reduces fruits and veggies to pure, liquid nutrients — no fiber involved. Basically, juicing does the chewing for you, so all the vitamins are delivered into your system much faster than they would be if you gnawed on a stalk of celery.

If you’re sick, or have a sensitive digestive system, juicing is especially beneficial, since your body doesn’t have to work hard to get a huge rush of nutrients. Of course, you have to be careful—pure fruit juice can make your blood sugar levels go wild. Add plenty of vegetables to your juices to avoid a spike in blood sugar.

Blending: It’s all about FIBER

When you blend a stalk of kale, all of the plant’s valuable fiber is still contained in the smoothie. The high fiber content of a green smoothie is part of why it’ll keep you much fuller than a glass of juice.

The blending action destroys the cell walls of fruits and veggies, making them easy for your system to digest, but the presence of fiber helps your body regulate your blood sugar levels. If you’re looking to replace a meal with something green, a smoothie is your best bet.

And let’s not forget that smoothies give you the option to add fancy, non-veggie ingredients like hemp, flax, or chia seeds.

The Ten Commandments of Juicing

1 Comment. Add your own comment!

This morning I had an epiphany. After slowly coming to consciousness from what appears to be a chocolate-induced full-body coma (I don’t remember much of what happened last night, but there’s evidence – a few dozen individually-wrapped candy bars wrappers littering the perimeter of my living-room couch like plastic Sloppy Joe’s rum cups line the gutters of Duval Street the morning following the last day of Fantasy Fest in Key West), I realize I need a shower. I also need some water. And some fresh juice.

And then it hit me! It was a shockingly joyous and exhilarating revelation, like the first time a four-year old discovers he can burp! One, Two, Three…they ran through my cranium so fast, I could barely keep up with the incredible wave of inspiration. I scrambled to jot down what was suddenly flooding my thoughts.

I grabbed a pen and paper, and wrote furiously. When I was finished, I sat back and took a deep breath. I raised the paper eye-level, and adjusted my focus, so that I could decipher the meaning of it all. And that’s when I realized I had become the humble recipient of a powerful, unexplain-able force - divine intervention, indeed – I’ve been called on to release the Ten Commandments of Juicing.

Having the blessing of the juice and fruit Gods reining through my chosen blood, I now bestow this incredible fountain of righteousness and wisdom on the meaning of juicing; to codify the path of the harvest believers to live a life of happiness, health, and of course, juice.

  1. Thou Shall Put NO Task Before Juicing - get your juice in the morning. Not only will it give you the energy and nutrients to tackle your full day, but it will help you get into a consistent routine and give you something to look forward to each day.
  2. Thou Shall Not Imitate Juice - many find supplement and vitamins to be a quick and easy alternative to juicing. The problem is that a growing body of researchers have found dietary and nutritional issues with vitamins and supplements, so I can’t suggest taking them. Besides, can anything really replace the taste of fresh juice?
  3. Thou Shall Not Take The Name of Juice In Vain – when your juicer clogs, don’t curse it. It’s little motor can’t take that kind of harsh criticism. Unclog it, and try chopping your fruits and veggies into smaller chunks.
  4. Remember To Juice on Holidays – I love holidays as much as the next guy, but it’s easy to get caught up in the whole “eat, drink and be merry” thing! Remember to juice on the holidays to keep up your regiment. Try some seasonal spices, fruits or veggies to keep it fun!
  5. Honor Thy Juicer – keep it clean and use it properly. Your juicer should last quite a while, as long as you treat it with care!
  6. You Shall Waste No Pulp – check out all the cool things you can do with juice and veggie pulp!
  7. You Shall Not Commit Fruit-dultry – we know those Ring Dings look pretty awesome right there on the corner of the supermarket isle (damn those clever marketing reps!). We must avoid temptation to turn away from our juice to junk food!
  8. You Shall Share Thy Juice – juice for your kids, neighbors, friends, and for get-togethers. This post was written last winter, but it’s still pretty cool. It’s my 4 favorite holiday drink recipes using fresh juice to entertain with!
  9. Thou Shall Read Thy 877MyJuicer Blog – keep in touch with us! Post to our Facebook wall, join our mailing list, and Tweet at us!
  10. Thou Shall Share Us – tell your friends about the blog, so they too can get a massive 15% off coupon on any product from the store!

Now go, and spread the mighty word of Juice!

Cure What Ails You With Citrus Juice

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Cure What Ails You With Citrus JuiceI was at a conference this weekend, spending my days in rooms full of people networking, shaking hands and sharing re-circulated air. It was awfully busy – late nights, early morning and meals that had little emphasis on health, but rather convenience.

And wouldn’t you know it – I can feel myself getting sick. I’ve got the ticklish throat, mild aches and an overall tired feeling that I cannot seem to shake, on the eve of a coming getaway, no less.

It figures.

I leave for my weekend sojourn in exactly two days, so how do I kick this sickness in the butt without having to set foot inside a pharmacy? You guessed it – juice!

My bet on juice as the cure

Whenever I am in a time crunch, like this one, I look to juice to help cure what ails me, for fast relief. Now, there are many juice combinations that are guaranteed to keep us healthy as a measure of prevention, but when sickness is at the front door, there a few juices that get the job done quite like citrus juice.

Citrus juice is packed with vitamin C, well known for being an extremely powerful antioxidant, with an ability to relieve and reduce many sicknesses and keep our body systems working at optimum level. The antioxidant powerhouse that is vitamin C is found in abundance in lemons, limes, grapefruit and oranges.

Typically you can often find me, early in AM, taking a shot of lemon juice on any given day, anyway. However, during this conference weekend, I let my routine get away from me – and that’s a lesson learned.

So this morning as I awoke, feeling less than stellar, I decided that I was going blast my malady with nutrients. I’ve been drinking juice all day – but specifically citrus juice.

My juice combination to relieve sickness

I combine two oranges, one grapefruit, one orange, one lime, and one lemon. You’d think the blend would be sharp and sour, characteristic of citrus fruits, but the sweetness of the orange takes the edge off quite nicely.

I will be drinking this juice blend three times today and three times tomorrow. Combined with rest, I firmly believe that wellness will be mine. I’ll report back soon!

With that, it’s back to my juicer and then back to bed.

Detoxifying Spring Juices

Detoxifying Spring Juices

The weathers finally warming up, and we’re actually getting kind of excited to stop gorging on cheesecake, jalapeno poppers, and rum-based drinks for a few weeks in order to celebrate the freshness of our favorite season.

And with that seasonal change, as always, comes the need to cleanse and detox. Whip up these detoxifying juices several times a week to cleanse your liver, brighten your eyes, and stock your system with potent vitamins in order to counteract those rainy spring sniffles.

Use organic vegetables if at all possible—that way, you’ll avoid any pesticides that come in contact with non-organic leaves and peels.

Dandelion-Spinach Detox Juice

Long praised for their liver-detoxifying properties, dandelion greens are rich in beta-carotene and have a signature bitter bite to them. Add more lemon (or toss in some agave) to taste if the juice is too bitter for you.

Spinach’s list of vitamins and nutrients is too long to list here, but let’s start with vitamin K, vintaim A, manganese, folate, magnesium, and iron (thinking of sneaking an extra handful of leaves into your juice yet?) If after you’re finished with this recipe, be sure to checkout our growing list of spinach blog archives for some other info and ideas on how to use this magical green!

  • 1/2 bunch dandelion greens
  • 4 cups spinach
  • 4 carrots
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 5 stalks celery
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled

Feed the dandelion greens and spinach into your juicer. Then add three carrots and the rest of the ingredients, using the last carrot to push all the rest of the ingredients through. Drink immediately.

Carrot-Beet-Celery Detox Juice

This peppery drink offers powerful detox action from the root vegetables, while the spiciness of garlic and black pepper gives your immune system a boost. Beets are packed full of a variety of antioxidants; carrots, as you know, are an amazing source of beta-carotene; and celery is a rich source of vitamin C (not to mention that its water content makes it great for juicing).

Radishes also help to cleanse the liver and improve digestion, as well as being a good source of vitamin C. Parsley isn’t just a garnish—it can actually neutralize certain carcinogens, and it’s full of antioxidants and folic acid. Enjoy this bright drink once a week for maximum benefits.

  • 1 carrot
  • 1 c. beets
  • ¼ c. celery
  • 2 tbsp radish
  • ¼ c. fresh parsley
  • 1 clove raw garlic
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper

Feed parsley through your juicer, followed by the celery. Add the rest of the ingredients, and top the juice with fresh ground black pepper. Drink immediately.

Prevent Juice Clogs and Enjoy Green Lemonade

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Green Lemonade And Prevent Juicer ClogsWe’ve all been there – you’re excited to get your juicing on and eagerly feed huge chunks of fruits and vegetables into the juicer, only to plug the thing up. Trust me, I have been there more than once in my life, because that’s what juicing does – it gets us so excited that we forget to chop our fruits and vegetables into sizes that our juicers can handle.

But I’m here to prevent this from happening to you or I ever again!

How to feed your juicer properly

Most juicers, unless commercial grade, appreciate it greatly when you cut fruits and vegetables into bite sized pieces. Think of feeding your juicer as you would think of yourself – do you want to eat food that forces you to chew with your mouth open? Didn’t think so! Juicers are the same.

Generally speaking, juicers fare rather well with leafy greens, so there isn’t too much cutting that is required. But for your own ease of use, I would give them a rough chop. When juicing things such as root vegetables that are tough and porous, feed them individually through the juicer. That will ensure there won’t be clogs. Fruits and vegetables that should be cut into juicer friendly pieces are:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower

Citrus fruits require particular attention, not because of their rough outer skins, but because those skins must be removed. The white part, called the pith, is incredibly bitter, and it’s made even more bitter when pulverized by juicing. If you feed the whole citrus fruit into your juicer, your juice creation will be ruined and your efforts will be wasted.

Your juicer can take a beating!

Now with all this said, don’t be afraid to push the limits of your machine. You never truly know what your juicer can handle until you put it to the test. If you can minimize the amount of work that you have to put in prior to actually juicing, you increase your likelihood of sticking with your healthy habits. Besides, cleaning up after juicing is work enough, so the least amount of prep required, the better.

Currently I am obsessed with this green lemonade - it’s full of antioxidants that make our cells feel amazing. The only prep that is required is the peeling of the lemon and cutting of the apple. Other than that, this is full of user friendly greens!

Green Lemonade

Makes 1

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 bunch kale
  • 1 granny smith apple
  • 1 cucumber

Peel the lemon and chop the apple, kale and cucumber into juicer friendly pieces. Feed it all through a juicer and drink immediately.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Kale Lemonade

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Kale Lemonade

Does anyone remember Iron Man 2? The special effects were memorable, but it was Gwyneth Paltrow’s tiny premiere dresses and shorts that had everyone buzzing.

One of the foods that helped Gwyneth get in shape—and maintain her legendary glow—for the worldwide movie premiere was a sweet juice made from our favorite powerhouse veggie: kale.

This isn’t Country Time—Gwyneth’s “lemonade” has a green, grassy flavor, of course, but it’s so simple (3 ingredients + water!) and so healthy that you can pump up the lemon or agave until it’s just perfect for your taste buds.

Drink it first thing in the morning; it will kick-start your immune system and give you a healthy, daylong glow that will make you feel like a movie star.

You’ll need:

  • 1 bunch of kale, stems removed and leaves washed
  • 2 lemons (kick it up to 3 if you need the extra immune boost)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons agave nectar (or more to taste)
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Make the kale lemonade

  1. Juice the kale and lemon.
  2. Mix in the agave nectar. Stir well.
  3. Swirl in the half cup of cold water.
  4. Taste. More agave? More lemon? It’s up to you.
  5. Drink it down!

Don’t forget, cruciferous kale is a fantastic source of dietary fiber, manganese, and vitamins K, A, and C. It’s also anti-inflamatory, antioxidant, and it’s even been shown to have anti-cancer properties.

The Juicing Power of Ginger!

1 Comment. Add your own comment!

The juicing power of ginger!

During my pregnancies, I didn’t have Morning Sickness – I had All Day Sickness that lasted the entire nine months.  There wasn’t much that would bring me relief, so I was willing to try anything and everything. This is when I discovered a little root called ginger.

You can find ginger root at your local supermarket or specialty store. It typically costs about $1.99 a pound and will survive for up to 3 weeks if stored in a plastic bag in your refrigerator.

To relive my nausea, I’d peel the root and slice a one inch chunk into 15 pieces, then boil the chunks in water for 30 minutes, and viola! I had a tea that settles the tummy. Little did I know that the power in ginger was oh so much more than it’s awesome soothing abilities.

What else can ginger do for you?

  •  In addition to helping with nausea, ginger also relives bloating and gas!
  •  Ginger contains antioxidants and phytochemicals. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory that helps arthritis, asthma, and even migraines.
  • In the battle against heart disease, it prevents cholesterol from oxidizing and lowers your LDL (lousy) cholesterol. Ginger also lowers your triglycerides, which are important as a mechanism for storing your unused calories.
  • Ginger helps prevent blood clots, which then lowers your risk of stroke and heart attack.
  •  In the home, ginger is used to treat coughs, colds, and congestion. Ginger also acts as an antihistamine to help with allergies.
  •  Ginger juice can also be used on snake bites. As a natural pain killer it provides immediate relief for tooth aches and minor burns!
  •  The University of Minnesota conducted a study that found ginger may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells (colon cancer).
  •  A study conducted at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that when ginger powder was applied to ovarian cancer cells it induced cell death.
  •  Heartburn sufferers can find relief in the root. It also helps protect against ulcers and gall stones.
  •  And ladies…ginger can help with those awful menstrual cramps!

Impressive, right? My husband calls it the miracle spice!

Juicing with ginger!

Ginger can be added to almost all your favorite juicing recipes! The daily recommendation is 5g, so I usually use recipes that call for 1 inch of ginger.

Kick start your morning with this simple recipe (pictured above):

  • 8 medium Carrots
  • 3 Apples
  • 1 inch of Ginger

Remember to wash your fruits and veggies before juicing, especially fruits that have a wax coating – like apples. The ginger adds a nice finish to the juice and you’ll find yourself with a boost of energy!

Here is a yummy recipe that will also get you going. Literally.

  • 3 medium Apples
  • 3 large Pears
  • 1 inch of ginger

This recipe is a mild laxative, so it’s great for regulating bowel movements.

For a sweet green juice, try this:

  •  1 cucumber
  •  1 carrot
  •  1 green apple
  •  1/4 cup parsley
  •  1/4 cup mint
  •  1 stalk of celery
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 1/2 lemon (peeled)

Cucumber is great for your skin and the celery is a natural diuretic, helping with the unwanted water weight!

Enjoy low sugar fruits!

3 Comments. Add your own comment!

Fruits and vegetables are so important in our diet that most well known weight loss and healthy lifestyle plans, like Weight Watchers, let you eat as much as you want throughout your day. For those of you who like to eat, this is brilliant. Fruit as dessert is a personal favorite!

Enjoy low sugar fruits!Dr. Mike Moreno, a weight loss dietitian, warns us however that “too much of a good thing can sabotage your diet”, and not all fruit is created equal. While bananas are great for things like potassium, they are also loaded with sugar and carbs. It was interesting to learn that if you eat too much sugar from one source, it can trick your body to converting that sugar into that thigh-sticking fat. If you’re battling the belly bulge, then a banana is not the best go-to fruit for you.

Which fruits are lower in sugar?

Remember how our Mom’s always told us that “An apple a day will keep the Doctor away?” Well, she might have been on to something. Apples are on the lower sugar list, and are a convenient snack to pack away in your purse or bag.

If you’re a fan of juicing, a couple of your favorite blending items are on the low carb, low sugar list (Yahoo!) You may happily consume peaches, and every single kind of berry. The extra bonus to peaches and berries is that the freezer section at the market is always in season.

If you enjoy citrus, then go for an orange or grapefruit (be aware that some medications warn you of mixing with grapefruit). Other fruits that made the list are pears, plums, and prunes. And let’s not forget one of my fav go-to snackable goodies, a handful of red grapes.

Which fruits are higher in sugar?

Unfortunately that “side of fruit” you order in a restaurant is probably on this list. Yummy fruits like honeydew, cantaloupes, and watermelon are higher in sugar, as is pineapple. Think about what makes them so yummy – the sweetness, of course!

Make it sparkle with cinnamon!

A fun topper for your fruit: cinnamon! Cinnamon has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels and by using it as a fruit topper, it will help metabolize the sugar you’re consuming. This super spice also does so much more (like supports digestive functions and lowers lousy cholesterol), so have fun mixing it in!

To really help your body fight fat, dietitians recommend eating only 2 low-sugar servings of fruit a day, preferably before 2 pm. If you don’t burn off all the carbs you consume during the day, then your body can store those extra carbohydrates as fat. Remember, carbs are what gives our bodies energy, so make sure you eat your 2 healthy servings of fruit!

How To A Clean Your New Juicer – Tips & Tricks

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

The thought of cleaning a juicer is enough to turn one off from juicing all together sometimes, what with all the moving parts…it can be a daunting task. I know this story oh so well.

When I first started juicing, my endeavor got off to a puttering start, because every time I juiced, it seemed like a chore having to clean my juicer. At one point I was juicing twice a day, and thus cleaning my juicer twice a day. I have learned a great many lessons about juicing.

Get the right juicer, and you might spend less time cleaning!

The first step in picking the perfect juicer is to take inventory of your juicing needs. If you are juicing for a large family, then a heftier electric juicer is likely the right choice for you. If you are a solo juicer, something smaller and perhaps manual may be all you need – and that will make cleaning easier for you.

Some people have a serious aversion to cleaning ANYTHING, so if this is you, consider buying a juicer that is 100% dishwasher safe. The LEXEN Healthy Juicer is a manual juicer that can be disassembled and placed in the dishwasher – I know, because I have one!

Handwashing may be unavoidable…

If an electric juicer is more your speed, hand washing is in your future. Step one, as is step one with anything that has the power to chop all your fingers off, is to unplug the juicer.

Then remove and rinse all the pieces that are dishwasher safe. Rinsing is essential because with all the gunk associated with juicing, it is a tall order for a dishwasher to eliminate it all. Wash the remaining parts and wipe down the juicer – spills and splashes are inevitable.

One last tip about handwashing

And lastly, always wash your juicer blades by hand, even if the manufacturer says it’s okay to place them in the dishwasher. In my experience, whenever I have placed a blade of anything – my food processor, blender or juicer – in the dishwasher, the blade has become dull.

When juicing, a dull blade can quickly cause frustrations, and we all know that juicing and cleaning is already a relatively involved task. Doing whatever it takes to make the process easier is a plus.

Getting bored while washing your juicer by hand?

Here’s some handy tips for keeping busy while you work.

  • Play some music on your iPod (Oprah puts out a great podcast called “Health and Wellness Channel – it’s worth checking out!)
  • Juice for a friend. They’ll likely hang around the kitchen while you clean.
  • Assemble an intelligent, personal robot capable of human emotions to clean your juicer for you.
  • Do squats between part rinsing.
  • Turn on the radio and jam
  • Pretend your not cleaning. Imagine yourself on a secluded Jamaican beach with an unlimited supple of freshly-blended Pina Coladas.
  • Have the kids clean the juicer in exchange for fresh juice!
  • Stage a mental breakdown related to juicer cleaning in front of your significant other, and then storm off into another room in a panicked and sudden madness. He/she will likely feel terrible and clean your juicer for you.
  • Use your Jedi-Mind Tricks.

The Un-Frosty Winter Smoothie

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Smoothies typify summer days as an icy fruity blend to help us keep cool and a fun way to get our daily vitamins and minerals. My smoothie intake tends to slow as the weather turns cold (the chill comes early here at 7,000 feet above sea level), and it’s a challenge for me to drink cold drinks when there is frost on the windows and snow on the ground.

But then I find myself missing the fresh fruity goodness. So I wondered, how can I have my smoothie without the chill?

The answer is the Un-Frosty Smoothie that offers all the smoothie goodness without all the smoothie ice, while featuring some of the best of the best in nutrition—as it’s power-packed with vitamins and minerals.

The best part about this smoothie, is that it brings together some of my favorite fruits accented with almond milk and turmeric. The concoction offers both tart and sweet tastes mirroring the layering of the smoothie itself.

The Un-Frosty SmoothieTurmeric and Fruits!

  • 2 cups cranberries
  • 1 apple, organic fuji or pink lady, chopped
  • 1 frozen banana, peeled
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp of turmeric, divided in half
  • ¼ – ½ cup of almond milk
  • Honey, stevia, or agave nectar to taste

Blend the cranberries, apple, banana, and lemon with ½ tsp turmeric. Pour into two glasses.  Mix in sweetener to taste. Mix together almond milk and ½ tsp turmeric and gently layer on top of the fruit mixture. Drizzle top with sweetener.

Nutritional Benefits

The ingredients in this smoothie are some of my favorites; I love how they come together to create this mid-winter treat and keep it real nutritionally. From apples to lemons, click the appropriate link below to find out more about the nutritional benefits each.

Cranberries are a good system cleanser from your digestive to your urinary tract. It is a powerful ally to your cardiovascular system. Cranberries are a fall/winter treat that keeps on giving vital nutrients such as Vitamin C and K. Click here to learn more about the captivating cranberry.

Apples are part of what I call ‘the crunchy food group’.  There is nothing quite as satisfying as a noisy bit of crunching as you munch on an apple. Click here to find out why the benefits of eating an apple a day is more than just an old wise tale.

Turmeric is a spice of the gods. It assists in healthy blood flow and reducing inflammation (great for arthritis sufferers, especially in the winter). Turmeric is a daily staple in my diet and I invite you to add it to yours. Click here for more about tumeric and a yummy warm drink recipe.

Lemons are a flavor enhancer for almost anything, plus they help alkalize any combination of foods. Lemons also assist in enhancing digestion. Click here for more on lemons.

Almond milk is just another delightful way to get your daily almond fix. Almonds are a powerhouse of energy for the body and mind. Click here to learn how to make your own almond milk and reap the benefits of the awesome blend.

As I wandered through the ingredients aisle for this recipe, I realized that I do actually eat these foods daily (excepting the seasonal cranberries). And the effect they have had on my life is substantial!  The power of these fresh, organic fruits and nuts (and spices!) empowers me and energizes me – they keep me fit and healthy.

My holiday wish for you all is that you engage the same kind of energy and nutrition – to power up for 2012!
