We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘When it rains it pours,’ but it never rings more true than when you’re hit with a mountain of bad news all at once. The thing with stress is, it’s inevitable. Life is full of peaks and valleys and wellness is about weathering those valleys as quickly and effectively as possible. Combating stress is both mental and physical–and juicing can be extremely beneficial in fortifying the immune system during times of trouble. While it’s tempting to throw your hands in the air and resort to comforting (albeit acidic and yucky for you) convenience foods, the trick to dealing with stress is emphasizing health and having faith that everything else will fall into place.
Any fresh juice is going to help alkalize your system, but some vegetables are actually better than others at supporting immune and neurological health when the going gets rough. Celery is full of organic alkaline minerals, including sodium, which has a calming effect on the nervous system. Coupled with its high water, magnesium and iron content, celery is the perfect base for a stress relieving juice.
If you’ve juiced celery before, then you know that the taste is… distinct. Mixing in a few other sweeter (yet equally effective at reducing stress) fruits and vegetables is the key to crafting a soothing juice cocktail that is good for the mind and body. Pineapple contains bromelain, a near magical extract that is used in the culinary world as a tenderizer. Similarly in the body, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and ‘smoothes’ the rough edges in the tissues. Plus, pineapple adds a bright, fresh flavor. Since stress does a number on your immune system, it’s important to supplement the body with extra antioxidants ward against disease formation. Carrot, a fantastic source of beta carotene (and thus Vitamin A), help activate the thymus gland – a huge factor in promoting immune health.
Try out the recipe below, and while sipping, repeat this mantra from Louise Hay, a guru of anxiety and stree reduction: “All is well. Everything is working out for my highest good. Out of this situation only good will come. I am safe.” Cheers!
Say Sayonara to Stress Juice
3-4 stalks organic celery
1 large organic carrot
2 bunches organic lettuce
1 large slice of pineapple
Juice all the ingredients, beginning with the ‘hardest’ fruits and vegetables first (i.e. carrot and pineapple) and ending with the lettuce. This rule applies to only those using a centrifugal juicer. Stir and enjoy!
