Is there anything quite as bad as a hacking cough? Not only is it uncomfortable and depressing, it’s irritating to both you and everyone around you. It crops up at terrible times (phone calls, class, business meetings) and it’s impossible to forget about.
Popping sugary cough drops provides some relief, but nothing terribly significant–your throat will be itchy and irritated again an hour later. If you’re looking to fight this sickness through whole foods and powerful nutrition, meet your new best friend: pineapple.
First of all, pineapple is full of vitamin C, which will bolster your immune system and helps you to heal. But more relevant to your sorry condition, it’s got a powerful enzyme called bromelain that has been shown to reduce inflammation (aka your swollen throat). Bromelain might also help reduce the cough and nasal mucus that are associated with sinusitis.
In short, this is an enzyme that you want in your corner of the ring when you’re fighting a cough.
This simple recipe makes a green juice that’s sweet, easy on your system, easy to make, and chock-full of pineapple. Don’t starve yourself when fighting off sickness–make sure you pair this juice with lots of healthy whole foods (warm soups, veggies, and grains) to help you recover as quickly as possible.
- 2 cups fresh pineapple
- 1/2 bunch kale
- 4 stalks celery or 1 cucumber
- small chunk of ginger
Peel the pineapple, juice, and enjoy! Follow up with a spoonful of raw honey to provide instant throat relief.
