In my humble opinion, there is no minor trouble in this life worse than a bout of nausea (except, perhaps, for headaches–but we’ll get to that in the next Juicing Fixes post). A queasy stomach can ruin just about any experience, and it’s surprisingly incapacitating. You can’t be in a moving vehicle, you can’t eat, you can’t look at things that are spinning really fast (so baby mobiles are out of the question), and you definitely can’t hit the town in 4-inch stilettos, no matter how bad you need to escape the house this weekend.
If you’re suffering from a stomach that won’t let you enjoy your Friday, whip up this simple, sparkling juice to nip your nausea in the bud. Ginger, honey, and mint are lauded for their stomach-settling properties, and a splash of sparkling water makes this the health nut’s version of ginger ale (sort of). I recommend juicing with Top 40 radio blasting away in the background, just because it’s the weekend.
Sparkling Ginger-Grapefruit Juice
3 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons fresh ginger root
handful fresh mint
Peel or slice the skin off the grapefruits and limes (you’ll be left with cool squishy citrus globes). Feed them through the juicer, followed by the ginger root. Use the cucumber to push through the mint.
Whisk in the honey until dissolved. Mix in 1 part sparkling water to 2 parts juice. Garnish with mint leaves (chewing on mint leaves is another good way to reduce nausea) and sip away!
