Getting bored with your regular green smoothie routine? Try adding a handful of fresh herbs to your next blend. They’re not just for savory dishes anymore–not only do herbs add a surprisingly vibrant flavor-punch to your smoothie, they’re packed with all sorts of unexpected health benefits.
First up: lovely little rosemary.
It looks like a tiny evergreen plant, and its piney-sweet fragrance is unmistakable. Rosemary, beloved of cocktail connoisseurs, candlemakers, lamb roasters, and bakers alike, is also full of surprising health benefits. Its flavor profile pairs really well with sweets, and what’s sweeter–sweeter for you!–than a green smoothie?
This tiny herb stimulates the immune system, increases circulation, and improves digestion. It’s also got some anti-inflammatory compounds–caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid–that may protect the brain from free radicals. It has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain–which helps to improve your concentration and focus. It may help with menstrual cramps, too!
A handful of fresh rosemary takes these green smoothie recipes from predictable to fascinating, from bland to sweetly herbal, and from good-for-your-bod to head-to-toe-great!
1 cup pineapple (fresh or frozen)
1 sprig fresh rosemary
1 frozen banana
greens to taste
handful Swiss chard or spinach
2 frozen bananas
1 spring fresh rosemary
lemon to taste
Blend until super smooth. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary, and prepare to feel energized and focused. Good morning, sunshine!
