Herbal Green Smoothie: Basil

Herbal Green Smoothie: BasilSuper-fragrant basil–best friend of tomatoes, confidante of fresh mozzarella, most at home on a margherita pizza–might scream SUMMER to you, but a shot of basil could be just what you need to brighten up these long gray days of winter. If your January resolutions are wearing thin, and February’s looking awfully long, punch up your green smoothies with the panache of fresh herbs. Did somebody say re-energize?

Basil wants to be your friend, too! A mere two teaspoons of basil gives you 60% (that’s six-zero!) of your daily vitamin K requirement. This under-appreciated vitamin is essential for bone and heart health, as well as for brain function and healthy blood clotting.

But what to pair with basil when tomatoes are long out of season? Thank your California farmers, because basil is a match made in heaven with another warm-climate star: berries. If fresh berries are too expensive, try them frozen–Trader Joes carries very affordable bags of frozen strawberries, blackberries, and all sorts of berry mixes.

Strawberry-Basil Green Smoothie

1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
1 frozen banana
Small handful of fresh basil leaves
2 cups spinach
1/2 cup nondairy milk

Blend all ingredients until smooth. The luscious flavors of strawberry and basil will transport you back to about 6 months ago when summer was in the air and everything…was…warm…

Blackberry-Basil Green Smoothie

1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries
1 frozen banana
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Small handful of fresh basil leaves
Handful of kale or chard
1/2 cup nondairy milk

Blend everything up until smooth. This combination is a winner, trust us. If you’re not usually a fan of tart blackberries, the banana and vanilla extract mellows them out, and the basil adds a fragrant, surprising dimension.
