I recently went on vacation – its summer, isn’t vacationing something we’re all doing?!
And I don’t know about you, but vacations for me inevitably mean indulgence. Drinks on a patio, large meals devoured without consideration of caloric content, and a deliberate eschewing of exercise.
What can I say, when I’m on vacation, I’m literally on vacation from everything.
But, alas, the buck has to stop somewhere, and when it does, it’s usually not pretty.
Summer detox tips and recipes
It’s well documented that I love detoxing, because when done properly, a detox can reinvigorate the system and shake off the vacation dust. This week as I endeavor to get back into the swing of healthy living, so I’m enlisting the help of smoothies and juices - and the greener, the better!
This isn’t to say that I have anything against a red, white or even blue smoothie, but green foods are full of life and potent liver tonics.
When most folks see a green smoothie or juice, the automatic assumption is gross, as years of childhood disdain of green foods is likely to manifest. But when the right combination of green foods come together to make a juice or a smoothie, something magical happens!
The look on someone’s face when they take that first sip of a green potion is that of surprise, I find. They’re surprised that something so menacingly green could taste so delicious.
Combine two or more of these ingredients to create a green smoothie:

This recipe is from one of my favorite kale cookbooks called the Book of Kale, and it’s the perfect color of green – no punishment, all delicious!
Green Queen Smoothie
- 1 cup green grapes
- ½ Bartlett pear
- 1 cup kale leaves
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup yogurt
- Ice, optional
Puree all ingredients in a blender until smoothie. Enjoy immediately.
