No beet greens or kale stalks required! This easy, sweet-tasting juice will please even the pickiest of juicing neophytes.

So your shiny new juicer has just arrived, and you’ve got it all set up and plugged in.

What now? Do you fling yourself into a frenzy of beet greens, nettle tea, and broccoli florets? Do you fill your juicer with stalks of kale and hope it turns out tasting like chocolate milk?

We’ve got your back on this one. Try this simple, sweet-tasting recipes that will have you asking for a refill.

The Ingredients

4 carrots

1 cucumber

Handful of spinach

1 lemon

1 apple or pear

The Directions

First of all, wash everything! Peel the cucumber and lemon, then core the apple or pear. Carefully feed the produce into your juicer, alternating between soft produce (cucumber, spinach, fruits) and three of the carrots. Finish off with the last carrot to make sure everything gets pushed down and juiced.

Pour the juice into a frosty glass and sip away, preferably through one of those fancy, curly fluorescent straws.

The Flavor

This recipe balances the sweetness of carrot, apple, and/or pear with the grassiness of spinach and the tartness of lemon. (Let’s be honest: can anyone taste the cucumber? We can’t!) It’s a great mix of accessible flavor for the juicing neophyte. Spinach is one of the easiest leafy greens to disguise in a juice—its flavor is gentle, and quickly overpowered by sweeter fruits and vegetables.

The Benefits

Juicing breaks down the cell walls of the fruits and vegetables, making the nutrients easily absorbable and digestible. Essentially, the juicing action does the chewing for you, so you can consume huge amounts of fruits and vegetables without having to gnaw on a bag of carrots all day.

It’s important to add plenty of vegetables to your juice, since pure fruit juice can lead to a spike in blood sugar.

Spinach is packed full of vitamins A, C, and B2, as well as manganese, folate, iron, calcium, and potassium. Carrots are your friendly neighborhood powerhouse source of vitamin A (and they ain’t bad when it comes to vitamin K, C, and potassium, either). And the vitamin C punch of the lemon will help your body absorb the iron in the spinach. Win-win-win!

To avoid unwanted pulp and to keep from damaging your juicer, it’s important to make sure that your fruits and vegetables are cut up properly. We've got some good tips here from our Professional Juicers.

Properly cutting your fruits and vegetables is a key and important step while juicing.

If you skip this process, then your beverage may end up with unwanted rind, pulp and skin. Plus, you can also seriously damage your juicer.

This doesn’t need to be a long and tedious process.

Most produce will only require a couple quick cuts.

Obviously the less powerful your juicer is, the more prep work you’ll need to do.

How to prepare your fruits and vegetables!

A helpful tip to keep in mind is that if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth that way, then you probably wouldn’t want to put it into your juicer.

Before juicing any produce, make sure you wash it well, removing any soil and pesticides. If your produce has a wax coating, be sure to wash it extra well.

You only need to cut your produce up enough for it to feed through the mouth of your juicers chute. Some items may go in whole, others you might simply need to slice down the middle.

A tip for juicing leaves: roll your leaves up into a bunch and follow it with a fruit or vegetable that has a high volume of juice.

Skin: It’s OK to juice fruits and veggies with their skin on. Often times the skin contains powerful nutrients, so it’s beneficial to juice them.

Seeds: The only seeds that MUST be removed are those of a Pomegranate (both inside and out). All other seeds can be used with your own discretion. Please note that there is some health risks associated with certain produce.

Stems & Tops: The only stem that does your body good, are grape stems. All stems should be removed. The green tops of your produce should also be removed.

Pits: Never put pits into your juicer because they can damage your blade and possibly seize the motor. Common fruits with pits are Cherries, Mangos, Apricots and Peaches.

Rinds: Most juicers can handle juicing your rind, but your beverage will probably taste much better without it. Often times citrus fruits will end up having a tart flavor, so unless your recipe calls for it, keep the rinds out. If you do decide to juice with your rind, then a little extra pressure might be required. Use a slow, gentle twisting pressure to process. Be careful not to use excessive force.

Not recommended for juicing: Some fruits and vegetables simply do not have enough water to be processed in your juicer. Produce like Bananas, Coconuts, and Avocados are better off sitting this one out.

The search begins for a new juicer, when mine dies suddenly.

Something horrible happened to me yesterday- there was a great loss. I woke up, ready to juice a magical morning concoction to start my day- a ritual in my home; I set up my Jack Lalanne Power Juicer, prepped my oranges, blueberries and carrots- the perfect morning drink or hangover cure. I placed them in the juicer, powered the machine on- and nothing. My panic level at this point was at a manageable level two- I hurriedly deduced that it was electrical outlet. I plugged it into another outlet- sure that I would hear the lovely hum I had become accustomed to; and, again, nothing. Panic level 4. I took the juicer apart, convinced that I could remedy this problem- I had to; I wouldn’t allow the thought that my juicer was dead creep into my mind. Sadly after thirty minutes, a barrage of expletives and even some tears, I called it- I pronounced my Jack Lalanne Power Juicer dead at 8:45 am. I was late for work having spent my precious morning minutes trying to revive my dead juicer. Epic fail.

I mourned for a full afternoon; and I then decided that I could sit wallow, or find a suitable replacement. Although I am very familiar with the Jack Lalanne family of products, as my deceased juicer was a Power Juicer; I wanted to see what else was out there- a lot has changed since I received my juicer three years ago. And, in my short and relatively brief research into the land of juicers, I have found that there are ever so many options.

Let’s start with Breville; what I like about Breville was they had a variety price ranges and the designs looked rather sleek- sleek is very important, as counter space is at a premium in my home. However, I could only find models that came in silver and/or chrome colors; and my kitchen isn’t accessorized to match- and yes that matters. And even at the lower end, Breville was still almost $100 more than a Jack Lalanne Power Juicer.

The Lalanne line on the other hand comes in a number of colors and styles- the most sleek being the Power Juicer Express to the mack daddy Power Juicer Pro, which is definitely beastly in size. Instantly the red Power Juicer Express stood out to me- the price ($100) was in line with what I could afford; and due to aforementioned premium for counter space, I liked the sleeker design.

I could also change directions and try another style of juicer. There are another style of juicers known as masticators- which use the process of mastication to chew the fibers of the food and extract juice from them. Currently being featured on 877myjuicer.com is the Healthy Juicer electric which is a multipurpose unit. Unlike many of the other units I’d had in mind, this unit can be used for juicing wheatgrass as well as fruits and vegetables. And although it is bigger in size, it eliminates the need for a stand alone wheat grass juicers- and in this competitive game of juicers that is huge plus.

There was so much to choose from and so many decisions to make- so many factors that I needed to consider; size over unit features, or whether to go with something familiar or try something new. I was over the hunt, I hadn’t had fresh juice in days; and by this point I really wanted a juicer. I loved my Power Juicer and had it not kicked the bucket I would still be using it, but the competition was starting to make a great case for itself; I ended using the Healing Juicer Electric and boy, does it feel good!

Scientist are starting to evaluate the most powerful of the healing factors of celery, a compound known as 3-n-butylphthalide or 3nB. 3nB is a compound unique to celery, responsible for the flavor and odor of celery. Have you ever been cutting up celery and the smell made you want to eat it before you put it in your recipe? Well now you should munch on it a little bit more in addition to adding it to your soups, stir fry, or juicing it.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, claims celery calms the nerves. It is also good for the kidneys and will eliminate body waste through the urine. Every part of the celery can be used, from the seeds to the leaves and the edible root of this plant. It has a high calcium content. Celery is also used in aromatherapy and in Ayurvedic medicine. Rheumatic patients in Japan are sometimes put on a celery diet. Celery is a high water content veggie, like cucumber. Great for juicing and eating raw too for fiber. Scientists found 3nB while searching for the reason of the medicinal effects of celery such as lowering blood pressure and relieving arthritis.

Here’s what we now know: Celery will reduce high blood pressure and give the effect of calmness. Celery clears uric acid from painful joints and help the treatment of arthritis and other rheumatic problems. Celery helps the kidneys and acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and celery is very low in calories because of its high water content. You can drink celery juice frequently to curb your cravings for sweets and rich food.

Celery is from the parsley and fennel family. The white parts of the celery are shaded from the sun, thus less chlorophyll, compared to the greener outside stems. Celery is the perfect addition to soups and salads. Celery juice is a good mix with sweeter fruit juices because of its salty taste. The nutritional benefits of celery leaves are its high content of vitamin A. The stems are an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C with richness in potassium, calcium, folic acid, iron, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and lots of amino acids. During juicing, nutrients in the fiber are released, aiding bowel movements. Yes, celery has a natural organic sodium content, but is very safe for consumption. Worried because you are salt-sensitive? No worries. It is unlike table salt, which is harmful for those with high blood pressure.

Recent studies have shown that celery may also help to combat cancer. Celery is known to have at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds, which will stop the growth of tumor cells, block the action of prostaglandins that encourage the growth of tumor cells and coumarins which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells. Celery will also balance the body’s blood pH, helping to neutralize acid and bringing you to a more alkaline base. Celery juice is the perfect drink for after your workout. It will replace lost electrolytes and rehydrate your body and has been shown to effectively and significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Celery can also be used as a natural laxative, relieving constipation. Also use celery juice to help regulate body fluid and stimulate urine production, which is important to help rid the body of excess fluid.

The polyacetylene in celery will relieve all inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis.

3nB has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the formation of arterial plaque in experimental studies. This will also increase the elasticity of blood vessels and lead to lowering blood pressure readings. Celery is also a diuretic. Most diuretics have dangerous side effects that result from either too much potassium or sodium. Celery extract acts as a diuretic but does not alter the ratio of sodium to potassium in the blood. The research on this is preliminary and some people will respond to this treatment and others won’t. This is also typical with conventional drugs. Drugs will lower blood flow to the brain, leaving people feeling tired, depressed, and forgetful. Celery extract has been shown to not only help prevent strokes, but also improve blood flow as well.

I have low blood pressure, and some people have had problems with celery because it will make their blood pressure even lower. I’ve never had a problem with it, so far. Listen to your own body..

Statements are meant to be informational only. Please consult with your medical practitioner if you are considering celery extract or celery to treat your symptoms.

Fun but true fact: celery was used in ancient Greece as a reward in sports contests.

I certainly believe if you start a habit early on in childhood, it will stick with you and make it even harder to stop. As a child, we only drank soda on special occasions. Today, I drink no carbonated beverage. I never gave my own daughter soda and to this day, she does not drink it. She does drink a lot of water and in her second year of college, probably drinks too much ice tea. When she began drinking from a sippy cup I had to start watering down her juice when her teeth started to stain from her consumption of apple juice. Organic or not, it stained her teeth. When given the option of ice tea or soda, I guess I’d prefer the ice tea. It’s all about moderation. You hear that all the time.

The website, publichealthadvocacy.org, states this….”Scientific evidence consistently supports the conclusion that drinking soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages increases a person’s risk of being overweight or obese. As a result, reducing the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages people drink is an important strategy to reverse the obesity epidemic in California and across the country.” The United States is the largest soda consumer, drinking 13.15 billion gallons of carbonated drinks every year. Drinking carbonated beverages, adolescents not only face obesity, but also are at risk for bone fractures higher than those who don’t, reduced bone mass and decreased calcium levels in the blood. The sugar and the acid in these drinks will also dissolve tooth enamel.

Soda, especially colas, contain caffeine and phosphoric acid. This has a direct effect on bone mineral density. Bone mineral density is reduced in osteoporosis. What causes osteoporosis? A reduction in the protein and mineral matrix of the bone. This will cause an increase in the risk of fracture and can be easily prevented with diet and lifestyle changes. There have been many studies of school age children (girls especially), that have concluded soda drinking was associated with decreased levels of blood calcium and increased urinary calcium, which could cause osteoporosis later in life. These studies have also found high bone fractures in cola consuming high school girls.

Soda consumption by children and adults is one of the most harmful habits we have. Soda is filled with empty calories. Diet soda is not any better. It is filled with artificial sweeteners which are more dangerous and can also lead to weight gain. As a parent, you are role models for your kids, for their eating habits and their social skills. According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), out of over 100 soft drinks and beverages analyzed by the government, five contained levels of benzene. Benzene is a cancer-causing chemical linked to leukemia.

Researchers from UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy “discovered a strong correlation between soda consumption and weight. Based upon data from more than 40,000 interviews conducted……researchers found that adults who drink a soda or more per day are 27 percent more likely to be overweight than those who do not drink sodas…” As our physical activity remained the same, our intake of calories increased. More than 43 percent of the new calories were from soda consumption. Children are at a more alarming risk of obesity and diabetes with their soda consumption. Soda is inexpensive, easy to obtain and children and teens are targeted in advertising. One soda a day is too much for your child. This drink is filling our kid’s bodies with empty calories and “filling” them up so there is no room for healthy food.

Type 2 diabetes has also increased during the last 20 years. Besides increasing obesity in children, the increase in obesity in adults, may also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This risk is greater in women. Sugar-sweetened beverages provide excessive calories and large amounts of absorbable sugars. Soda is empty calories.

Water will quench your thirst much better than soda. Water will remove toxins from the body and will aid in digestion and curb your appetite. Eat fruits and high water content veggies and dilute your fruit drinks. Begin a juicing routine.

Drink healthy.

Whether you are sitting in front of your computer looking for a job like me, or sitting in front of your computer doing your job, read on for some much needed stress relief. I’m in Vermont and I just had to turn the heat on. My mouse hand was freezing. Whatever you are doing right now, thanks for taking the time to read my latest blog.

All of us are under some sort of stress. We can’t know peace without chaos. Let’s start with a deep breath. Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth letting out a big sigh. One more time and let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Press your sit bones (the sharp bones that hurt when you ride your bike too much) into your chair and lengthen up through your spine and the top of your head. Tuck your tailbone down and under while doing this. Squeeze your shoulder blades and draw them together and down your back. Keep breathing.

Draw your arms out in front of you, circle your wrists in both directions. Slow circles. Interlace your fingers and turn your hands outward and stretch your arms and drop your shoulders. On the inhale, bring your arms up over your head. On the exhale, release your hands and drop your arms to your side. One more time. As you exhale, let out a long sigh.

Sit at the edge of your chair. Hold the arms and on the inhale, open your heart and slowly arch your back, lifting your head and lengthening your throat. On the exhale, tuck your tailbone, start to round your back and tuck your chin into your chest and lengthen the back of your neck. Two more times and don’t forget to sigh on the exhale. Go ahead, no one is watching you.

While still holding your chair, start to twist your torso to the right, allowing your gaze to follow your body. Take your eyes even further than your torso. Hold and breathe. Go to the other side slowly, breathe and hold.

Back to face the front and open your eyes wide. Move them clockwise and then counterclockwise. Rub your hands briskly until you feel heat. Place your palms on your eyes and breathe. OK? Take the time at least once an hour to do one or more of these relaxation and stretching techniques. And don’t forget to breathe.

On to the emotional side of our life that has such a huge impact on our physical health. Some things we believe about ourselves or our situations are just old childhood patterns. Just as the things we chose to eat as a child may no longer “nourish” us, so are some of the thoughts we had as children no longer serving us. Take a moment to actually “hear” what you are thinking about. Each moment is a new beginning. Each thought is shaping your life right now.

It’s the perfect day to start to take better care of ourselves, emotionally and physically. Yoga, meditation, eating healthier, having healthy thoughts; all ways to start your transformation.

Here’s to all of you who are SURVIVORS of the economy. This following is from Louise Hay:

“I am totally open and receptive to a wonderful new position, one that uses all my talents and abilities, and allows me to express creatively in ways that are fulfilling to me. I work with and for people whom I love, and who love me and respect me, in a wonderful location and earning good money.”

I’m putting that one up on my computer!

Recently I’ve been reviewing the basics and here’s some more info that you newbies need to know (and possibly some that have experience will get something out of it to… in other words, no matter who you are, keep reading for God’s sake). A month or so ago I gave you the lowdown on the three basic categories of juicing and their benefits; Greens, Vegetables and fruits. In this article, we’ll look at the differences and benefits of the two basic juicer types, Centrifugal and Masticating, and we’ll give a little attention to juicing enthusiast’s preference, the Twin Gear juicers.

Centrifugal Juicers

Centrifugal juicers are the old faithful and they’ve literally been around for decades. When I was a kid I remember my mom whipping me up a tasty batch of carrot apple juice with an all stainless steel unit identical to the Acme 6001. I always thought it looked like a robot. Anyway, not much has changed over the years and with good reason. These juicers are fast, effective and affordable. Centrifugal juicers work by using a flat cutting blade on the bottom of a rapidly spinning basket. Food is quickly shredded by the cutter and flung out to the sides of the basket. The high centrifugal force passes the juice through tiny holes in the basket and through a spout. In some like the Omega 4000 the pulp is spun off and collected in a separate container. The juice produced by centrifugal juicers is excellent but the extraction process—higher revs and resulting motor heat—incorporates more oxygen which oxidizes the juice destroying more enzymes and therefore diminishing the health benefits a bit as well as reducing the shelf life. So drink immediately if possible. These juicers are great for most fruits and vegetables but because of the nature of the cutting process, centrifugal juicers do not break down leafy green vegetables very well so if you’re looking to juice wheatgrass or other greens, you’re better off with a masticating juicer. View a Selection Here

Masticating Juicers

Mastication means to “chew”. So masticating juicers like the Healthy Juicer (which is unbelievably easy to clean) use a slow rotating single auger (or boring tool) to literally crush and chew the produce into juice and pulp. The pulp is squeezed up against a mesh strainer so the juice is extracted while the pulp remains behind and gets ejected. Masticating juicers are more efficient than centrifugal juicers in that they yield more juice from the same amount of raw food. They also run at much lower RPMs, so the foam and oxidation is much less, therefore producing juice that is more nutritionally dense and has a longer shelf life.

That said the biggest problem with masticating juicers is the speed. Many people who make the switch, either because they want to begin juicing wheatgrass and leafy greens or they’re just going for a healthier alternative, get a bit impatient with the time involved compared to their old centrifugal model but it’s really a question of commitment to a healthy lifestyle. My preference is a centrifugal juicer for most stuff and a manual masticating juicer for the green stuff. View a selection Here

Twin Gear Juicers

Ok, so finally we come to the elite sports car class of juicers, the Twin-Gear or, if you want to sound hoity toity, “Triturating” juicers. I guess the sports car metaphor doesn’t really work because although these guys will produce the highest yield and most nutritional juice, they’re no faster than single auger juicers. Anyway, Twin-Gear juicing is also a masticating process but instead of a single auger they use two stainless steel gears with very close separation that turn in towards each other crushing the produce between them. The juice is then passed through a screen and the pulp is ejected similar to the masticating juicers. Twin-Gear juicers like the Greenstar 2000 have an incredibly powerful motor so you can literally juice anything. At the same time they have the lowest RPM and therefore the most nutritious juice with the least oxidation. They tend to be more expensive but you’re paying for quality. View a selection Here

Happy juicing!
