This blender leaks around the base into the mechanism. It started leaking after a few uses. Adjusting it a little this way and a little that way (not too tight, very tight) did not help. I've found that lubricating the threads where the bottom screws on and lubricating the gasket has helped. Vegetable oil works as the lubricant until it gives out.

It is quiet for a blender, and easy to clean with good automatic cycles.

I run a batch of water in it before every use to see if it is leaking.

It took a week to reach Breville's customer service. Instead of sending me a new seal, they sent me a brand new blender. I was impressed. Well — it immediately leaked. The leak workaround works for this one too.

I have the Breville juicer and had hoped the blender would stand up to that quality. It surpasses it. It pulps up anything we toss in - completely. My kids are wild about the snowcones we make with just a push of the pulse button. My wife, a phenomenal chef, can't get over how completely it breaks everything down. We love it!

I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find a dependable blender. I had an Oster for about a year, but when it stalled, I couldn't find support for it on their website. That's when I started reading horrible reviews about its short life. I've come to realize that small kitchen appliances are disposable. You have to find one you like and when it breaks, replace it!

This time, I decided to spend more on a better blender and the Breville 550XL has exceeded my expectations. It's not their most expensive blender, but it's right for my use.

Make sure to read the instruction booklet first! I learned how to avoid some of the problems reported in other reviews.

I don't use the blender daily, but when I do, it performs flawlessly. I love the rich texture it gives to margaritas.

I've had no problems with the blender leaking. Mainly because the way the blades are engineered in the stainless steel bowl of the blender, it really doesn't need to be removed for cleaning after every use. I blend some warm water with a drop of dish detergent and rinse it out.

Six months later and the Breville is still kickin'! It makes such smooth ice and friends always comment how my margaritas are like you'd get from a commercial freezer. I love it!

Terrible with frozen fruit Review by Lucy

I have a Breville Ikon and it's the worst blender I've ever owned. Whenever I tried any frozen ingredients, the bottom of the blender came loose. Avoid this one if you chop ice or use frozen fruit.

I have never written a review until now, but consumers beware!! We replaced our old blender of 4 years with the Breville Ikon mainly to make green smoothies. Within just months there were gasket leak issues. Poorly designed for daily usage. Bought a Vita-Mix.

For the love of smoothies Review by Salud

I love making smoothies: just fruit, greens and water. My husband and I went searching for a good blender. All the reviews on all the blenders had something wrong with the product, so there is no perfect blender. We decided to go with the Breville, even though we read over and over how it leaks. My first and only smoothie from this blender leaked from the bottom.

We ended up with a KitchenAid Chef's Blender. I have only used it three times but no leaks.

Form not equal to function Review by Jakub

This blender looks great on the counter. Sexy stainless styling, red and blue backlit buttons, a fearsome looking set of blades.

Unfortunately, function is not equal to form with this blender.

Blade assembly is separated from base with a wussy rubber gasket that collects food and is difficult to position. Blade assembly/gasket takes some skill and torque to align and twist on. Top is difficult to wedge on and remove.

These problems could be overlooked, if not for major overheating that goes on when the machine is in use. The machine has timed settings, most of them lasting no more than 60 seconds. I can't help thinking that the time limits are less for convenience and more about saving the blender from overheating.

Next time out, I'll look for a less expensive blender, that may not have the Breville's looks, but will do what blenders were made to to without the extra effort.

I bought this blender, hoping for quality and a long life. We returned it because it leaked. After seating the container, if the handle was turned, liquid leaked out from the (lack of) seal. Very hard to tighten. Just not worth the extra effort and worry every time we used it.

I love most everything about this blender, except for the gasket that seals the blade block in place. It has to be done very, very precisely, or else it turns into a blender of horrors in your kitchen.

This blender does blend well, better than most. It doesn't leave clumps at the bottom of the jar. I have also had the Waring Pro and a Kitchen-Aid blender. Comparing the three, the Kitchen-Aid actually does the best job of chopping and blending. The quality of the Breville is still amazing. Just watch out for the gasket.
